GCFF Introduction to Fly Fishing
The class is designed to meet the needs of fly fishing anglers who have not yet been adequately exposed to the fundamentals of fly fishing or anyone wanting to improve their fly fishing abilities.
All GCFF members as well as the public (children aged 12 and older please), are welcome to participate.
The general public who want to take the classes can do so for a fee that includes club membership should they choose to become a club member.

The course includes a Class Syllabus, Handouts, and Access to the Presentation Modules. The fees cover the costs of providing this instruction as well as other fly fishing classes and clinics.
The Introduction to Fly Fishing Class - Approximately 30 hours
- Classroom sessions
Saturday, April 25th and Sunday, April 26th; 9am to 4pm; 12 hours
- Fly Casting Instruction on the Grass
Saturday, May 9th - 10am to 1:00pm; 3 hours
- On the Water Instruction
Saturday, May 23rd - Time TBD; 6 hours
- Fly fishing event for class members
Date and time TBD; 6 hours
Two classroom sessions will take place at the BriarPatch Coop Community Room.
The first classroom session will include:
- Introduction to the Program
- The Fly Rod and Reel
- Fly Lines, Leaders, Tippet
- Fly Fishing Glossary and Gear
- Fundamental Theory of Fly Casting
- Essential Fly Fishing Knots
The second classroom session will include:
- Rigging Your Rod
- Fishing Sub-surface – Nymphing and Swinging Flies
- Trout – Our Adversary
- Bugs, Making it Meaningful
- Fishing Stillwaters
- Catching and Releasing Fish
- Safety and Etiquette
- Where to Fish Locally
Fly Casting instruction will take place utilizing the GCFF’s Fly Casting Skills Development (FCSD) program. The students will start with the Foundation Level and then proceed to fly casting instruction using the FCSD’s fly casting lanes.
On-the-Water Clinic – The GCFF fly fishing mentors team will provide coaching and instruction for the on-the-water clinic.
A fishing opportunity will be scheduled for the class. The students will have the opportunity to apply the skills they have learned. The class will offer fishing at a local fishery.

GCFF does not refund monies paid for events. In most cases, members will receive a credit on their account which may be used for future club charges.
